Do you know all of the web’s simple acronyms like www and url? What about the more complicated ones like xml or php? Everyone throws around these terms that are actually household names! But do people actually know what they stand for? My guess is no.. I’ll admit, I had to look some these up. But I thought it would be fun to see what you guys know and maybe you’ll learn a few new ones!
WWW – world wide web (okay we’re starting out easy!)
URL – uniform resource locator
HTTP – Hypertext Transfer Protocol
HTML – Hypertext Markup Language
XHTML – eXtensible Hypertext Markup Language
XML – eXtensible Markup Language
FTP – file transfer protocol
PHP – Hypertext Preprocessor
WYSIWYG – What You See Is What You Get (This one still gets me, it’s so simple!)
RSS – Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary
ISP – Internet Service Provider
DOM – Document Object Model
CSS – Cascading Style Sheets
CMS – Content Management System
CGI – Common Gateway Interface
DNS – Domain Name Server
SEO – Search Engine Optimization
What else can you add to the list?
I swore up and down that I didn’t need another networking site or another site to post on and keep up with.. I guess you can never have enough networking resources
But Twitter sounds like it’s pretty fun and you can gain valuable resources, contacts and info from! So I joined Twitter! Follow me if you like, but since I’m new, if I see you following me, I might decide to follow you too.
“Internet Explorer 6 will be SEVEN years old on August 27th. It came out a few weeks before the Twin Towers fell. It came out before the Nintendo GameCube. It came out before the first iPod.”
That is far too old for a browser, especially a non-standards compliant one. As a web developer, I feel the pain of trying to get around the quirks of a browser that just doesn’t support a lot of common things. Everything works great until you test it out in IE6! For those that aren’t familiar with why many are against IE6, here are a few resources to check out:
Save the Developers
Stop IE6
Campaigns to kill IE6
I’m still not quite sure why it’s such an issue for people to switch, there are many many options for a more secure, standards-compliant, and user-friendly browser out there. It doesn’t render images or text nicely and it makes life hard for all of us developers, so do us a favor and switch.. even upgrade to IE7!
FREE browsers that are great!
Download Firefox
Opera
Flock
A funny quote I found recently: “As bad as we may want IE6 to lay six pixels under, the truth is it’s far from dead.” So true.
What are your thoughts on this old browser?
While this has nothing to do with what I do (web, print, logos, etc), I think all design and art are very cool, especially something that takes an immense amount of talent.. and time! Check this out: http://www.toxel.com/inspiration/2008/07/28/creative-sand-sculptures-from-latvia. What kinds of cool art have you seen lately?
I happened upon this post: http://designm.ag/interviews/best-design-sites and it got me thinking.. where do find yourself most often on the internet? Here are my top picks:
http://css-tricks.com – Chris Coyier has a lot of good things to say and lots of valuable insights, a great resource to read.
http://noupe.com – A great resource to find out whats going on with other designers and other blogs. I love the news section where people can post their blogs and cool stuff they find.
http://nettuts.com – Very nice tutorials and in-depth stuff here, some great mootools and jquery stuff
http://webdesignerwall.com – Great posts, great insight, good stuff
http://logopond.com – Lots of great logos for when I’m looking for something really cool or to just feel inspired by others.
http://designmeltdown.com – I love how everything is divided into categories and you can find example sites and inspiring design in just about every genre you can think of.
