Creating a collage can be fun and very simple with Photovisi, a free online collage creator. They have tons of different layouts and options, and it literally takes a few minutes to complete.

You can use the collage in blog posts, email newsletters, holiday cards, on your website.. the possibilities are really endless. The file sizes that they provide you with allow for you to use it for just about anything.

We asked Maurice, co-founder of Photovisi, a few questions about the service and what it can do for you. Check it out:

Can you please tell us a little bit about Photovisi and what you can do there?

Photovisi is a free and easy to use online service to create collages from your photos. We offer several creative templates and options to make something unique and personal.

I’m Maurice, co-founder of Photovisi. I’m mainly concerned with the front-end development of the website itself and working with the various designer to get new templates online. My partner is working mainly on the actual Flash tool itself.

How did Photovisi get started?

Photovisi got started by playing around with the Flickr API on a weekend. The idea was to create a service that automatically generated a desktop background based on a certain Flickr search query. You’d enter some tags and it would then create a wallpaper from the results, in the form of a collage. After playing around with it for some time it actually made much more sense to directly add your own photos too, instead of using only Flickr photos. That’s basically how the idea came about, but a lot has changed since then. I think the whole thing got rebuilt three times by now, mainly because there were scalability issues with the first two versions. We finally decided to go with a Flash client in the third iteration, and the user experience has improved tremendously since then.

Are there any fees associated with Photovisi?

No, Photovisi is a completely free product. For a web service like this, getting as many people as possible to use it is the most important factor in getting somewhere. Making it a paid product will undermine this significantly.

What can I use these collages for?

Most of these collages end up as desktop backgrounds or on backgrounds for services like Twitter, MySpace and Facebook. During the holiday season we also have a lot of users creating collages as a personalized gift, mainly as framed prints or postcards. We’re aiming at people who like to be creative, but are not savvy enough to use software like Illustrator.

I see there is a contest going on, can you tell me about it?

We’ve seen a lot of really creative things coming out of our tool, even though most templates are pre-designed. We thought it’d be nice to reward this creativity by organizing a contest. It’s a lot of fun to browse through the public gallery and see what other people created. For this contest we have a theme, and it’s ‘Show your heart’. The idea is to show a heart somewhere in the collage. This can be done for example by using your arms in different positions on individual photos, to compose one big heart form.

Thanks Maurice! I would never promote something that I didn’t think was cool enough to be featured here. So I gave the service a try, and it really is as simple and easy as it seems. Check out my masterpiece above! Give it a try yourself and let us know what you think in the comments area below. Photovisi.com
