Are templates replacing web designers?

templatesYou can find templates online for pretty much anything these days. There are html and css templates, templates for WordPress, all sorts of different cms templates, e-ecommerce templates, etc. Many of these are pretty cheap and some are even free, so where do web designers fit into this picture? I’ve had many clients and potential customers ask why they should use my services instead of just buying a cheap template. Are web designers being replaced?

Creating a website is much more than placing your logo and some text on a page, it’s about creating a look that appeals to your specific audience and fits in with your company’s values. Your website is often the first impression your customers and potential clients will have of your company. You need to make a powerful statement describing what you do and why it’s valuable. There are some well-designed templates out there, but do they fit your company? Is it something you would be proud to call your own?

Why Use a Template

  • You need a site up and going quickly
  • You don’t have the funds to pay for a web designer’s expertise
  • You don’t care about getting a custom design

Why Use a Web Designer

  • You want your website to stand out from your competition
  • Your company needs special things that a template can’t do
  • You want technical support and the knowledge that a web designer has to offer

Templates are great for some things like quick and easy projects that isn’t very important or don’t need lots of attention, something like a personal blog theme. But don’t settle for less than the best for your company’s website when it could make or break a customer’s opinion of your company. A website is an investment for your business and it shows customers the quality of your products and service that you offer. Which will you choose for your business?
