Blog Action Day 2013 – Human Rights

business | education | inspiration | resources by Shannon Noack on October 16, 2013 | 0 Comments

We are proud to participate in Blog Action Day for the 6th year in a row! Blog Action Day is a movement to focus the conversation online on one topic for one day. As a blogging community we can help shed light and awareness on a global topic on this day, even if it’s just with one blog post.

The topic this year is Human Rights. We found this quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to be very moving:

Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm, or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.

We chose to focus our post this year on the 2013 partners of Blog Action Day and the great things they are doing to raise awareness and bring change.

Amnesty International

Amnesty International aims to raise awareness for many different types of human rights issues, including forced evictions. They put together this post on the Blog Action Day website with a ton of information about it. The video below covers the topic of forced evictions, illustrating the problem in a very powerful way:
